I especially like this symbolism when a couple is remarrying and they have children from their previous relationships. The combining of sands by the couple, and their children, into a special vase brings together the particles of their previous lives into a new life that they begin together.

The vase of sand then becomes a visual reminder of the vows they exchange and the promises they make to each other as a new family.

This can also be used as part of a naming ceremony. It is a lovely way for siblings and parents to welcome the new child into the family by sharing a part of themselves whilst still maintain their individuality.
